Battle Suits

When life is shaping up to be another day in Armageddon, I have different ways of preparing. There are the obvious preparations like eating healthy and dressing for the occasion; then there are the more obscure things like mental preparation and adorning your battle suit. Probably sounds silly, but over the years I have pieced together a “battle suit” that really helps when life becomes difficult. It’s also a staple for me…when my family, friends, or roomates see me in this suit they know to tread softly.

So what’s my battle suit? Bare feet, plain cargo shorts and bright Hawaiian shirt. If you were to see me sitting cross-legged somewhere..yup, that’s my battle stance. Silly and strange? Yes…but believe it or not it helps. On a mental level it helps to associate certain things with strength, so when the battle comes you will be more prepared.

Writing this post got me thinking–while the original title was “My Battle Suit”, I’m curious if others do something similar? Do you have a battle suit? Maybe a sentimental scarf, special shoes (girls, high-heels?), or actual plate armor?

I’d love to read what you think!

It’s No Problem At All

So you want me to hold your hand,
While mine are broken and bleeding?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to move mountains,
While you refuse to lift a pea?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to squeeze feelings
From this heart you’ve turned to stone?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to save money,
While you spend it like it’s yours?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to understand,
While you never make any sense?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to submit and follow,
While you never take the lead?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to smile and never complain,
While “Grumbling” is your middle name?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to steal the moon and lasso the stars,
While you’re never happy with anything?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

So you want me to love you,
While you don’t know what that means?
Sure, that’s no problem.
Not a problem at all.

But I Digress

People want to be heard. People don’t want to listen.
But I digress..

People want to be found. People don’t want to search.
But I digress..

People want to be fed. People don’t want to cook.
But I digress..

People want to be cured. People don’t want to heal.
But I digress..

People want to be accepted. People don’t want to accept.
But I digress..

If you want to be heard, listen.
If you want to be found, search.
If you want to be fed, cook.
If you want to be cured, heal.
If you want to be accepted, accept.
If you are not happy with life, change it!

But I digress..

A Silent Smile

Briskly walking to my day’s end
Absorbed in my thoughts.
Secure in my coat from the chilling wind.
Head down, I almost didn’t see
The child in my path.
We froze. I waited for her, and she me.
Attempts to walk past all for naught,
She captured my eyes–
And within a moment–my soul and heart.
It was like speech, but with no voice.
Her face framed a smile,
A silent smile, void of pretense or choice.
But a novel could not describe
The heart in this smile.
Such joy, such hope, such innocence and life!
How could I respond? What could I say?
Just a little child..
She wouldn’t translate my thankful essay.
Bored from my trance, she turned aside
With wave and cute eyes.
Then, without pause, I returned her silent smile.

The Living Paradox

Since you are reading these words
congrats on not being dead!
(Notice where I placed the emphasis:
On death–not life instead!
Because being alive requires more than undeath;
It means having the courage to take the next breath.)

Too many people I know
Believe life comes with a price.
They hustle and bustle, buying what’s new
hoping it will suffice.
But life means much more than your possessions or wealth!
It means hope for tomorrow regardless of health.

If you have read up to here
my friend, smile! For you’re alive.
“But what” you ask, “about reading this text
makes me live and thrive?”
Because being alive–and this is the pivot–
Is doing each task like you’ll never re-live it.
